Calumet, Colorado or Las Vegas, New Mexico

062310RedDawnSignX
I was walking around Las Vegas, New Mexico, today and shot this Calumet mural with the iPhone Hipstamatic photo app. The sign was used in the 1984 movie Red Dawn, with many scenes shot around Las Vegas, New Mexico. The movie plot told the story of a fictional city of Calumet, Colorado, during a Communist invasion of the United States.

1960s Phone Mural

0610PhoneMural1X
One recent walk led to the AT&T building in downtown Los Angeles. Located on the Grand Avenue exterior is the 1961 mixed art 3-d mural titled "Bell Communications Around the Globe." Artist Anthony Heinsbergen used surplus telephone components to create this 36 x 17 foot piece. A couple photos posted processed with Topaz Detail was called for. I just had to make those phone parts ring, oops, I mean sing!

Old Trapper's Lodge

060610BlondeX
In 1941 John Ehn opened up a motel at Arvilla Avenue and San Fernando Road near Burbank Airport. In order to attract attention to his "Old Trapper's Lodge." Ehn decorated the motel with western sculptures and artifacts. Ehn did most of the sculptures. The entire site became California Historical Landmark Number 939 in 1985, but the motel was still purchased and razed by Burbank Airport.

But somehow most of the sculptures and other folk art was saved and ended up at a park on the grounds of Pierce College in Woodland Hills. No one at Pierce College has every said who allowed the historical folk art on campus, or who has been maintaining the site for years.

The site is in good shape, but many of the signs have really faded and need restoration. I found some 2005 images on Flickr where the signs were fresh and easily readable.

I bumped up the color with Topaz Detail 2. I also shot some frames with iPhone Hipstamatic app. Enjoy.

Moving On

0508DoveX
Dove released during 2008 Memorial Day ceremonies in Westlake Village.

No, I am not moving, just taking better advantage of my flickr pro account. Over the weekend I moved all my galleries over to flickr.

With flash not supported on the Apple iPhone and iPad, I needed to have the option of both flash and non-flash galleries. For now, the quickest workflow is to post images directly from Lightroom to a new flickr set. Then post a link to the flickr set and then add a second link to the corresponding slideshow. The slideshow feature automatically turns the flickr set into a flash slideshow gallery.

I was able to post a good list of links in one session. Gallery page.
